A butterfly holds the upper third of this sheet, wings spread and edged with a dense row of small beads. Inside that margin, larger round spots sit in the open wing panels and fine lines divide the surface into irregular cells. A garden crowds the bottom half. Two tall spikes rise on straight stalks, each packed with dozens of tiny overlapping buds, and around them open blooms show rings of petals set around stippled middles. Broad leaves and a few closed buds fill the gaps down to the bottom edge.
Two very different scales of detail share this page, and that is worth planning for before the first pencil goes down.
The bud spikes hold the smallest shapes here. Rather than outlining every one, lay a light base over a whole spike and then pick out a scattering of individual buds a shade or two darker. The eye reads the rest. That leaves your patience for the wing margin, where the beads really do need doing one at a time.
