Vertical bark fills this page from top to bottom, drawn as long wavy grooves that run the full height of the sheet. A butterfly clings to it with wings open flat. The upper wings angle outward and carry light vein lines, while each lower wing holds a large circle with a smaller circle set inside it, the marking this species takes its name from. A segmented body divides them into neat bands and two antennae curve up between the wings.

Bark and butterfly are doing opposite jobs, which is what makes the sheet work. One is a field of long thin strips, the other a set of broad open shapes.

Use that split. Keep the bark in a narrow band of browns and grays, varying the strips only slightly, and the butterfly will read as separate from it no matter what colors you pick. Save the strongest shade on your desk for the two eyespots. They are small, they are round, and they are the first thing anyone will find on the finished page.
