Contrast carries this page. The wing margins are laid in as solid black, wide, and every one of them is punched with white dots in a double row, so before a single pencil touches the paper the sheet already reads as a monarch from across a room.
The insect sits high and slightly right, wings angled as though it has just settled. Inside the black borders the wing cells are large and generous, separated by strong veins that fan out from the body, and no fussy small shapes appear anywhere. The head carries two thin antennae with rounded tips.
Below, two flowers open on long stems, each with a middle of fine bristling stamens and broad rounded petals. Leaves fill the bottom left corner. The stems cross near the base of the page and carry on off the edge.
Monarchs lay only on milkweed, and the plant's bitter sap stays in the caterpillar and then the adult, which is what makes a monarch taste wrong to a bird.
Orange in the cells, black already done for you. Leave the dots white and the page needs almost nothing else.
