Size first. The wings cross almost the entire width of the sheet, and both forewings sweep up and outward to a point, which is the shape that gives this group its name.
Texture is the second thing you notice. A series of bands crosses each forewing, and every band is filled with fine stipple rather than flat ink, so the wing reads as shaded without anybody drawing a shadow. The hindwings carry six dark eyespots in a curve, solid and round, set against paler fan shaped cells, and their outer edge is scalloped. Two long tails trail from the hindwings and each finishes in a small filled club.
Flowers frame the insect: a ragged bloom at the top left, a full open one at the bottom right, and thin stems that curl underneath and tie the two together.
Giant swallowtail caterpillars survive by looking like bird droppings, a disguise so effective that citrus growers who want them gone still have to hunt for them.
Those stippled bands will take a light wash and keep their texture. Save your darkest pencil for the eyespots so they hold as focal points.
