The pose is the reason to pick this page. Instead of the usual flat specimen view, the butterfly comes in from the left with its wings held up in a V and three legs already stretched toward the flower, so you are looking at the insect from the side and slightly behind. The near wings show their full pattern of long radiating cells and a beaded outer hem; the far pair shows only as an edge.

It is reaching for a zinnia whose middle is a tight ring of packed florets, drawn as a textured crown, with broad petals fanning out beneath. Two more zinnias grow on the lower left with buds and long pointed leaves, and a few small crescents float in the space between.

All four corners carry a rose and scrollwork motif at a lighter weight, which closes the composition without competing.

Common blues are tiny in life, about the width of a thumbnail, and only the males wear the blue. Females come in brown with a scatter of orange along the edge.

Blue on the wings, hot pink or orange in the zinnias. Those two sit well together.
