Two narrow bands of vine run the full height of the page, left and right, drawn in a fine wandering line that loops through small open flowers. They work as a frame, and they keep the eye on the middle of the sheet where everything happens.
There the subject rests with wings held up and slightly apart on a broad leaf whose central rib and side veins are all drawn in. Those wings stay pale, marked only with faint chain borders and soft vein lines, which fits an insect named for a plain white. Its body is short and ringed, and the antennae bend forward rather than sweeping back.
Above and a little left hangs a chrysalis on a short thread, with a tiny curled bud beside it. Top right a pair of ruffled blooms opens on heavy stems, and a smaller flower waits at the right margin, half turned away. A second long leaf crosses the bottom left corner.
Cabbage whites lay their eggs one at a time on brassicas, which is why gardeners know them better as a pest than a decoration.
Try the leaf in two greens, light along the rib and darker at the edges.
