A single butterfly grips the top of a tall stem near the upper left of this page, seen from the side with both wings raised. Long vein lines divide each wing into narrow panels that run from base to rim, and a row of small scallops finishes the lower edge. Two slender antennae curve up and away from the head. The rest of the sheet belongs to the plant. Three stems rise from the bottom edge, one carrying a closed pointed bud, another branching into smaller buds, and a third opening into broad lance-shaped leaves.
Nearly half the page stays white. That makes this a forgiving sheet for a young colorist, or for anyone testing an unfamiliar set of pencils.
The wing panels invite a gradient without demanding one. Run a pale shade at the wing base and deepen it toward the outer rim, keeping every panel in the same family so the wing still reads as one surface. Leave the paper behind the butterfly bare and it will lift off the page on its own.
