The axolotl on this sheet is asleep. Its eye is drawn as a closed curve with short lashes, its head rests flat against a large smooth boulder, and its body relaxes into a long S with the tail hanging off to the right. Circles and rings in several sizes cover the back, the raised dorsal ridge is cut into sharp triangles, and the feet end in splayed, striped toes.
The rock underneath is the largest plain shape on the page, broken by only two or three contour lines. Wide daisies bloom in the upper corners, small round blossoms and loose spirals scatter across the top, and bare branching stems frame both sides.
Treat that boulder as your quiet zone. A single flat gray or a soft warm tan there will throw the patterned body forward without any extra effort. Those back circles are sized differently on purpose, so they respond well to a two-tone treatment where large rings take one shade and small ones another. Hold the scattered blossoms pale so they stay in the background.
