This axolotl is drawn from the side in a walking pose, which makes it one of the few sheets in the collection that shows the whole length of the animal at once. Round spots are scattered across the back, about a dozen of them, running from the shoulders along the spine and carrying on partway down the tail. Each one is an open circle, so they all take color separately.
The head is turned toward you with one large filled eye and a long easy smile. Thin whiskers sweep back from the snout. The gills branch up and out from behind the head in lobed frills, and a small fin sits further back along the body. All four legs are visible with their toes marked, and the tail tapers to a point at the right edge.
Spots are the fastest way to make a page feel finished, because each one is small and the result is immediate. Color them a few shades darker than the body and they stay crisp. Make every spot a different color and the sheet becomes a much longer job for the same drawing. Real wild axolotls are a mottled brown, which is worth trying if you want something other than the usual pink.
