A small bow tie sits just under this axolotl's chin, drawn as two triangular loops meeting at a knotted band in the center. It is the only piece of clothing on the page and it is left plain inside, so it takes a single color cleanly.
Everything above it is gills. Three broad frills branch from each side of the head, drawn with lobed edges that look closer to oak leaves than to feathers, and together they make the head almost twice as wide as the body. Two large eyes are filled dark with highlights left white, and a long curved smile runs between them. The body below is plain and unmarked, the four limbs are short with clear toes, and the tail sweeps out to the right.
Those big gill frills are the reason to pick this sheet. They are separate enough to color one at a time, which suits a child who likes finishing things in stages. A deep pink across all six against a pale body is the traditional look. Giving each frill its own shade turns the head into a fan of color and takes a good deal longer, which is the point if you want the page to last.
