A broad boulder fills the lower third of this drawing, its surface broken by a handful of short fracture lines that split it into four or five uneven facets. An axolotl is perched on top with its front feet planted wide on the stone and its toes splayed for grip. The tail runs down the left flank of the rock and curls under at the bottom.
Antler-like gills branch from both sides of the head, thick and lobed, and the face carries two glossy eyes, a pair of nostril dots and a relaxed smile. Tufts of long pointed grass grow from the ground at each bottom corner, and one tall blade leans in against the rock on the left.
The rock is the test here. Those fracture lines divide it into facets, and giving each facet a slightly different value turns a flat gray lump into convincing stone. Work light on top and darker underneath. The grass tufts want a green cool enough not to fight the axolotl, and the creature itself is the one place for a warm color. Leave the sky area above entirely blank so the scene stays airy.
