This axolotl is sitting up straight, back legs folded flat underneath and to the sides, front feet resting on the ground in front with their toes spread. The upright pose makes the torso the tallest shape on the sheet, a smooth untouched oval from shoulders to floor. Nothing interrupts it, which is unusual on this hub and makes the page a good candidate for an ambitious wash.
The head is wide and the gills are magnificent. Six long stalks fan out from each side, stacked in tidy rows and tipped with rounded bulbs, forming a crown that reaches almost to both page margins. Two dark eyes, two nostril dots and a broad easy smile sit beneath. The tail tip appears briefly at the right, just past the folded leg.
That gill crown is where the time goes. Working from dark at the base of each stalk out to pale at the bulbs gives the fan real depth, and because the stalks are separated by clean white gaps you can push the contrast hard without muddying anything. Then keep the body simple. One soft tone across that big oval is all it asks for.
