Two axolotls share a broad lily pad on this simple sheet. The one in front is fully drawn, with four splayed feet, a row of soft spines down its back, and a scatter of oval marks across the shoulders. Its companion rests close behind, showing a head, one front leg and a short gill frill, with the rest of its body tucked out of sight.
The pad beneath them is wide and nearly empty, broken only by a few radiating vein lines. Two thin reeds lean in from either side, and a couple of small ovals float on the water.
There is a lot of white paper here, which makes this a good page for younger hands or for testing a new set of pencils. Those oval marks invite a second tone laid over the base shade of the back. Try working the pad in a different family from both animals so they lift off it clearly, and leave the pond untouched. Blending is far easier on shapes this size than on a crowded sheet.
