An axolotl has made itself at home inside a wide rounded teacup, both front feet hooked over the rim and its chin resting just above the lip. Only the head and shoulders are visible above the cup, which puts the face right at the center of the sheet. The cup stands on a short foot, and a curved open handle loops away on the right side.
Underneath, a broad oval saucer spreads nearly the full width of the drawing, drawn as two simple nested curves with a faint inner ring. Two small feet poke out below the cup's base, a cheerfully illogical detail that is worth keeping. Branching gill stalks fan out from the head and the smile beneath them is very wide.
China is the fun part. A plain white cup with one painted band near the rim looks convincingly like real crockery, and the saucer can repeat the band to match the set. If you would rather go bold, the cup is one large uninterrupted surface and will hold a floral pattern easily. The axolotl should stay pale either way so the creature and the china never compete for the same attention.
