This page looks straight down at an axolotl sitting in the middle of a swim ring. The ring is drawn as a wide band between two clean circles with a third line running inside it, so it reads as a tube rather than a flat disc, and it frames the animal on every side. The axolotl is small inside that frame and completely visible: head, body, both arms, both legs and the tail.
Branching gills open out from each side of the head in soft prongs. The eyes are two filled ovals set wide apart above a broad smile. Both arms stretch out toward the ring with the fingers spread, the back legs show their toes, and the tail curls away to the right and tucks just inside the band.
The ring is the obvious place to be bold. Split the band into alternating segments the way real swim rings are made and the sheet gains a pattern without any extra line work. A plain band in one strong color works just as well and takes a quarter of the time. Leave the paper inside the ring white and the axolotl will look like it is floating on open water.
