Spirals and scalloped scales cover the axolotl in this decorative bowl, above a heap of plain stones built for flat color.

An axolotl curves through a round bowl here, and every inch of it carries pattern. Tight spirals cover the flank, the tail turns to overlapping scalloped rows, and the limbs are stippled with tiny leaf shapes and dots. One large lidded eye looks straight out at you.
A heap of smooth stones fills the lower third of the bowl, and slim pointed fronds rise behind the animal on both sides. Outside the glass, ornate sprays of curling petals and coiled tendrils decorate all four corners of the page.
Contrast between the stones and the body is the whole design. Those pebbles are big, plain and closed, so they take flat solid color without any fuss, while the spiraled flank needs a light hand or its pattern disappears. Try holding the animal to one narrow family of tones and letting the corner flourishes run cooler or warmer than everything inside the bowl. That separation makes the glass boundary visible even though no shading marks it.
