Two axolotls swim above a deep bed of ribbon grass here. The larger one crosses the middle of the sheet with its head to the left, a ruffled frill running the length of its back and a broad paddle tail fanning out behind it. The smaller one floats higher up and further right, drawn the same way at roughly half the size. Both wear a small closed smile, and both are outlined in thick clean strokes with nothing drawn inside them.

Water plants take up the entire lower third, dozens of long blades leaning and crossing one another. Round bubbles of several sizes rise through the open water in between, and two reeds with pointed heads stand at the left edge.

Plenty of open paper is left around all of it, which makes this a comfortable sheet for a younger child. The two animals are the biggest blank areas on the page and will take color quickly. The grass is the opposite, so treat it as optional: leaving most blades white and picking out only a handful stops the bed from swallowing the swimmers above it. Bubbles do best left bare or given the faintest wash, since they need to read as water rather than as objects.
