This axolotl has tucked itself into a loose ring. The body makes one broad rounded mass across the middle of the page and the tail sweeps out from behind it, curving around the bottom and rising again on the left so the whole animal closes into a circle. Two small hands rest together near the center, each one drawn with separate fingers, and a back foot tucks in beside them.
The head sits high on the left and turns to face you. Two gill branches rise from the skull, each splitting into soft rounded prongs, and two small spots mark the top of the head. The eyes are filled dark and set wide, with a long curved smile underneath.
A curled pose like this one gives you a single enclosed shape to work inside, which makes it easier than it looks. Run one color around the whole body and save a second tone for the tail where it passes behind, and the overlap will read as depth without any extra lines. The classic pale pink with deeper pink gills works well here. So does a soft gray body with bright gills, which suits older colorists who want the frills to carry the sheet.
