One lotus flower sits in the middle of this page, opening above calm water. The bloom is built from three clear layers. A tall pointed petal stands at the front and center, a second tier rises behind and to each side of it, and a third tier spreads wider still and tips outward until the lowest petals lie almost flat. Every petal is a simple closed teardrop with one curved crease running up its middle, and nothing is shaded anywhere.
Beneath the flower sits a shallow pad, drawn as two long leaves reaching out left and right with a small rounded base between them where the stem meets the surface.
The water is the other half of the design. Rings of ripple spread out from the flower and fill the whole lower third of the sheet, drawn as long thin ovals nested inside one another and growing wider toward the edges. Finer lines run between them where the rings break and overlap.
The contrast is what makes this one work. The petals are large and few, so they fill quickly, while the ripples are many and thin and reward taking your time. Everything above the flower is bare paper.
