This is a mandala rather than a scene, and it is built in rings from the middle out. At the center sits a plain round sun disc, surrounded by a crown of long pointed rays, some solid and some banded. A crescent moon overlaps the sun on the right, its inner face divided into narrow segments. Outside that runs a band carrying small stars, then a ring of pointed star and leaf motifs, and finally a wide outer border of scrolled spirals, teardrops and curling tips. The whole design is eight-fold symmetric, so every element repeats around the circle.

That symmetry is the key to coloring it well. Decide a scheme for one eighth of the ring and repeat it around, and the result looks designed rather than filled in. Breaking the symmetry deliberately also works, but it should be a decision rather than an accident.

Every line on this sheet is the same weight of solid black, so there are no faint areas to lose.

Sun and moon shown together as a single joined emblem is very old, and it almost always means the same thing: a complete cycle, day and night held in one image rather than opposed to each other.
