Wide bat wings spread behind this calavera, one on each side, each built from long bold finger bones with open membrane panels stretched between them. The lower edge of every wing is cut into deep scallops, the shape a real bat wing takes when the fingers are spread. The skull in front is simple by comparison. A five petal flower sits above each eye socket, both sockets are left as open ovals, a small heart marks the nose, and a row of square teeth runs along the jaw with short tally marks on the chin below. Bats and calaveras belong together more closely than they look. Both turn up on Day of the Dead altars, and the bat is an old Mesoamerican symbol tied to the underworld long before the holiday took its current form. The membrane panels are the place to experiment. Running a gradient out along each wing from dark at the body to pale at the tip gives the page depth with no shading at all. Keep the two brow flowers matched so the face stays symmetrical.
