A short candle stands on top of this calavera with its flame drawn as a clean open teardrop. Behind the candle a ring of rounded petals spreads across the crown of the head, half hidden by the candle body, so the skull appears to be wearing a flower and a light at once. The face below it is dense with pattern. Rings of dashes encircle both open eye sockets, curved brows arch above them, and tight spirals fill the temples on either side. A narrow heart marks the nose, dots run along the upper lip, and the teeth sit in one long row of separate blocks. Small scrolls finish the chin. Candles sit on every real ofrenda, one for each person being remembered, which is why the imagery pairs so naturally with a decorated skull. Keep the flame and the candle body pale against a strongly colored face, and the light will read as light. If you color the flame dark it stops glowing and turns into a leaf. That is the one trap on this sheet.
