This calavera hangs from a twisted rope as a party pinata, and the whole surface is built from rows of fringed paper. Each row is a strip of crepe cut into fine teeth, layered over the one below it the way a real pinata is made, and long ragged tassels trail down from the jaw. Count on spending time here: the fringe is the densest line work on this page and it repays a steady hand. A round flower sits on the forehead and both eye sockets are left wide open and white. The rope above is drawn as a proper twist rather than a plain line. Fringe is made for layering. Pick three shades of one color and run them in bands down the skull, darkest at the bottom, and the paper picks up depth without any shading at all. Leave the rope plain so the eye travels past it. Finish the tassels last, because by then your hand will know the rhythm of the strokes and the loose ends will come out even.
