Sugar Skull Cookie on a Plate Coloring Page

Round iced cookies shaped like calaveras turn up in every Mexican bakery in late October, and this page draws one close up and flat on. The whole circle is piped with decoration: a garland of small blossoms curves across the top, two round eye rings are built from rows of piped beads, and a heart nose sits between them. The mouth is a long line of square teeth with a flower at each corner, a scrolled flourish tucked above both. More blossoms crowd the outer rim. Everything here is drawn as an open shape, which is exactly how icing behaves. Royal icing is laid down in flat blocks of color rather than blended, so flat marker or a solid pencil wash is truer to the real thing than any amount of shading. Work the rim blossoms first, then the eye rings, then whatever is left. The cookie reads best when the background of the biscuit stays pale and every piped detail is bright, which is the opposite of how most faces on this site are colored.
