A braided band of celtic knotwork runs right around the top of this skull like a crown. The strands weave over and under each other the whole way along, and every gap between them is an open shape, so the band alone holds about thirty separate pieces to fill. Below it the face is drawn plain and bold: two large open sockets with shaped inner rims, a long narrow nasal opening, and a wide row of square teeth set in a heavy jaw. Short tapered strokes mark the temples and the sides of the mouth. Interlace of this kind has no beginning and no end, which is the whole idea behind it, and that gives you a clean way to color it. Follow one strand all the way around in a single shade, then follow the next in another, and the weave becomes obvious in a way it never is on the uncolored page. Keep the skull itself pale so the band stays the feature. Use pencils rather than markers here, because the strands are narrow where they cross.
