Three spotted mushrooms push up out of the top of this skull, a tall one in the middle and a shorter one leaning out on each side. Every cap carries round open spots and fine radiating gills underneath, and the stems are banded where they meet the bone. An ivy vine winds across the cranium and spills down to the ground on both sides, carrying about fifteen pointed leaves. The skull itself sits on a short hatched ground line and its eye sockets and nasal opening are drawn filled in solid, which is how a real skull looks when the light is behind it. There is a reason this image feels familiar. Fungus genuinely is what returns bone and wood to soil, so a skull with mushrooms growing out of it is less a horror image than a picture of the thing finishing its job. Classic red caps with white spots suit it, but a muted palette of browns and mossy greens makes it quieter and arguably better. Save the gills for last and use a fine point on them.
