This is the plain article: a human skull drawn straight on, with no decoration anywhere. A single suture line runs down the center of the cranium, the cheekbones arch out as open curves, and the eye sockets are left clean and white rather than blacked in. The nasal opening is drawn as an outline too, which almost no skull illustration bothers to do and which makes a real difference if you intend to color it. Two full rows of teeth meet along the bite line, every tooth boxed on its own. Artists keep a skull on the desk for a reason. Learning where the cheekbone turns and how far the jaw sits behind the teeth fixes a lot of portrait problems, and coloring one slowly is a surprisingly good way to learn it. Shade the temples and the hollows under the cheekbones a shade deeper than the dome and the whole thing lifts off the paper. Bone is rarely white, so warm grays, creams and pale ochres look more convincing than leaving it blank. Gray pencils suit this page better than markers.
