A pair of butterfly wings spreads wide behind the skull and reaches both edges of the sheet, upper wings sweeping up into points and lower wings hanging in rounded lobes. The veining inside them is drawn properly, branching thin as it approaches the outer edge, and a band of oval spots follows the rim of each wing. Two curled antennae rise from the crown. The skull in front is decorated with a small crest and a rose above each brow, dotted scrollwork curling down the cheeks, a heart nose and a wide stitched tooth row with an infinity loop just below it. Both eye sockets have come out filled solid black rather than open, so the darkest accents are placed for you. Wings this large are an invitation to work a gradient, and the veins give you natural boundaries to change shade at, so you can move from deep orange at the body out to pale yellow at the tips without any blending. The butterfly is not a random pairing either. In Mexican tradition monarchs arriving each autumn are understood to be returning souls, which is exactly the same idea the skull is built on.
