Two ideas are doing all the work in this drawing. The first is the trunk, which is not a single column but several long strands twisting around one another the way rope is laid, separating and rejoining as they climb. Follow one strand up from the ground and you can trace where it crosses behind the others.

The second idea is the canopy. There is not one leaf anywhere. Every branch instead ends in a spiral, and the spirals nest and overlap until they fill out a broad round crown. Some coil tight and small at the edges, others open into wide loops near the middle. Two of the lower limbs are marked with a dotted line running along their length.

At the base the strands fan out into roots that spread flat across the ground, each tapering to a point, with a couple of small pointed motifs tucked between them.

Everything is drawn in a single even line weight with no filled areas at all, so the sheet prints light and takes pencil beautifully. One approach that suits the subject is to shift color gradually as you climb, earth tones in the roots moving through the trunk into brighter shades at the outer curls.
