The bird stands in profile, slim neck curving up to a small head with a beaded crest of three stalks and one long lashed eye above a pointed beak. Nothing about the outline is fussy. All of the decoration sits inside it.
That decoration builds in layers as you move back along the body. The throat and shoulder carry a bib of small rosettes and rows of scallops. The wing is one large oval panel holding a flower at its center with scalloped rings spreading out around it. Behind the wing a second, tighter cluster of rosettes marks where the tail begins.
From there the tail becomes a run of overlapping leaf shaped feathers, each one ruled with fine veins, stepping down and to the right and tapering to a single point. Two slender legs and a pair of splayed feet hold the whole arrangement up.
What makes this a friendly sheet despite the pattern work is how much of the page is left bare. The bird occupies a diagonal and the corners stay empty, so there is somewhere for your eye to rest. Peacock blues and greens are the obvious route. Going warm instead, with ambers and reds in the tail, is worth trying because the veining carries either scheme.
