This elephant looks straight out at you, which is what makes the design work. Facing forward means both ears spread wide and flat on either side of the head, and each one becomes a panel for decoration: a lotus rosette opening at the center, then rings of scallops, small paisleys and dots working outward to the rim.
The brow carries a pointed crown shape with a matching teardrop hanging below it, sitting neatly between two large round eyes with lashes. The trunk drops straight down the middle of the face, ruled across its length with soft chevrons that follow the natural creases. Two short tusks curve out on either side.
Lower down, the four legs are stout and plain, which is a relief after the ears. A band of small leafy henna sits just above each foot, and every foot shows a row of rounded toenails. A little tail flicks out to one side.
