A peacock faces you head on with its train fully open, and the fan behind it is the entire point of the sheet. Around forty five eye feathers are arranged in three rough arcs, each a pointed oval holding a smaller oval inside it, and every one is a closed shape waiting for its own treatment. The bird in front is drawn very plainly by comparison: a smooth body, a short neck, a small crest of three feathers, and two scaly legs standing on bare paper. There is no background and no ground line. That plainness is a feature, because it means the fan can be as ambitious as you like without the page falling apart. Working the eyes in concentric rings, running from blue at the middle out to gold at the rim the way a real train is marked, takes a long time and looks extraordinary. Working them as a random scatter of every color in the box takes half as long and looks cheerful. What fails is a single flat color across the whole fan, which throws away the only structure the drawing has.
