A parrot perches in profile on a vine crossing the lower half of the page, its long pointed tail sweeping down past the branch and off the bottom edge. The drawing is clean and open: a heavy curved beak, one round eye with a ring around it, a few strokes suggesting cheek feathers, and a folded wing marked by six or seven long lines. There are perhaps thirty separate areas in the whole picture. A handful of pointed leaves hangs from the top right corner, more sprout along the vine, and a single small fruit sits near the bottom right. The entire upper left quarter of the sheet is blank. This is a page for confident flat color rather than careful shading. The shapes are large enough that a marker will not bleed the detail away, and a macaw palette of red, blue and yellow across the wing and tail is the obvious and correct choice. If you want more from it, that empty upper left will take a wash of sky or a few leaves of your own invention, and the drawing has room to absorb them without looking crowded.
