Everything on this page is drawn in the same heavy black line, which makes it the boldest sheet in the bird set and the easiest to finish with markers. A horned owl sits at the middle of a bare tree, ear tufts up and eyes wide, body turned slightly toward you. The tree is the real subject: a thick trunk climbing the right side, a heavy limb running left beneath the owl, and a dozen leafless branches forking off into the sky. The bark is striped with long solid black bands that follow the curve of each limb, so a good deal of the sheet is already dark before you begin. Behind it hangs a plain circle for the moon with four smaller circles scattered near it, and nothing else. No leaves, no ground, no texture in the sky. The owl's breast carries a field of small teardrops and the wing has neat layered feathers, and those are the only fine areas anywhere. Because the black bark does so much of the work, a very limited palette succeeds here: one color for the owl, one for the moon, and bare paper everywhere else reads as a clear night.
