A hummingbird hovers to the left of a large hibiscus, its long thin beak pushed into the middle of the flower and the stamen column brushing past its chin. Both wings are drawn open and swept back behind it, one above the other, each filled with long parallel flight feather lines, and a narrow tail trails below. The body carries a few short strokes at the throat and nothing else. The hibiscus is the biggest shape on the page: five broad ruffled petals, each veined with fine lines radiating out of the throat, opening almost as wide as the bird is long. A thick stem runs down to the lower right corner carrying four large pointed leaves, every one with a center rib and a herringbone of side veins. The sheet divides neatly in two. The bird asks for small careful work and suits a fine tip, while the flower and the leaves are broad enough to take anything. A hummingbird's throat is the one place where a metallic or iridescent pencil earns its keep, and because the drawing leaves that area almost blank there is room to build it up over two or three passes.
