A bald eagle comes straight at you with both wings raised and spread to their full width, and the drawing is built so that the two wings match each other exactly. Each carries three ranks of feathers, short and rounded where they meet the shoulder, long and bladed at the tips, with about twenty separate flight feathers to a side. The head is turned very slightly, the hooked beak and the brow above it are clean of any texture, and the breast below is covered in a field of small stipple marks. A fanned tail and two sets of talons hang beneath. Along the bottom of the sheet, well clear of the bird, runs a low range of mountains drawn in thin single lines, with a wide band of empty sky between them and the eagle. The symmetry is what to use here. Because the wings are mirror images, whatever you do on the left can be repeated exactly on the right, which makes an ambitious feather by feather treatment far more achievable than it first looks. The stippled breast will not take marker cleanly, so keep a pencil for it. The mountains want almost nothing, a pale wash at most.
