A cardinal sits in profile on a pine branch that runs across the lower third of the sheet, crest raised, tail angled up and back toward the left corner. The bird carries the most line work on the page: a solid black mask wrapping the base of the beak, fine hatching down the breast and belly, and layered scale marks across the folded wing. Its branch is hung with pine sprigs and half a dozen rounded lumps of snow. What surrounds it is not a landscape. Roughly fifty small doodles float across the open background, spirals and single leaves and tiny five petal flowers, with one hanging ornament at the upper right and a larger bloom in the top left corner. They read as falling snow if you keep them light and as wallpaper if you press hard, and you get to choose which. The cardinal himself needs only one red, since the mask is already black and the hatching will carry the shading for you. Everything else here is optional, which makes this a page you can finish in fifteen minutes or spend two hours on without either version looking unfinished.
