A street of houses is strung with lights for the season, and the artist has drawn every bulb along the eaves, around the doorframes and wound through the small trees in the front gardens. Snow lies on the roofs and along the tops of fences, a wreath hangs on one door, and figures walk along the cleared pavement. The bulb count is high and each one is small, so this is a detailed sheet for adults and older teenagers.
Hundreds of individual bulbs need a system or the street will look chaotic. Pick four colors and repeat them in strict rotation along each strand, exactly as a real light string does. Then keep the houses, snow and sky in muted grays and blues, so the lights are the only saturated thing on the page. If you have a white gel pen, a dot on each bulb afterwards makes them read as lit.
One thing worth knowing while you fill in all those bulbs. Strings of electric Christmas lights were sold from the early 1880s onward, not long after the light bulb itself became practical, and they replaced the genuinely hazardous habit of clipping lit candles onto the branches of a tree.
