A doe and a fawn stand among snow-covered trees, the fawn tucked close against its mother's side, with drifts banked around the trunks and snow resting along every branch. A few flakes fall through the gaps. The outlines are clean and the animals are drawn large and simply, without the fine fur texture of the detailed sheets, so children of about five to nine can color this happily on their own.

Deer are a good subject for teaching one small idea. Suggest coloring the body in a mid brown but leaving the belly, the inside of the legs and the patch around the muzzle much paler. That one change stops the deer looking like a flat brown cut-out. The snow on the branches can stay white with the faintest blue in the shadows underneath.

Deer are better equipped for this weather than they look. Their winter coat grows in hollow, and each hair traps air inside it, so the animal is carrying thousands of tiny insulated tubes. Snow will often settle on a deer's back without melting, which tells you how little heat is escaping.
