Seen from above, a child lies spread out in fresh snow with arms and legs sweeping through the powder, and the finished angel shape is already forming underneath. The artist has drawn the churned snow around the body in fine granular texture, added the pattern on a knitted hat and scarf, and included a line of boot prints leading in from the edge of the picture. The overhead viewpoint and the detailed texture make this an unusual page, suited to older children and adults.
The winter clothing is where the color goes. Give the hat, scarf and mittens a proper knitted pattern, stripes or zigzags picked out in two or three strong colors, because they are the only saturated things in the scene. Everything else stays pale. A light blue in the hollows of the disturbed snow will make the angel shape read as a dent rather than a drawing.
While you work, here is the thing worth knowing about snow. Every crystal has six sides, without exception, because of the way water molecules lock together as they freeze. The variety in the shapes comes from the exact path each crystal takes falling through the cloud.
