A shallow stream winds down between boulder strewn banks thick with wildflowers and bare early spring trees.

A stream comes down through the middle of this page from a low horizon, narrowing as it goes back and widening toward you, drawn with long curved ripple lines and scattered pebbles showing through the shallows. Both banks are piled with boulders, big smooth rounded shapes in the foreground and smaller ones further up, and between and over them grow clumps of wildflowers on thin stems, tufted grasses and seed heads. Three bare trees stand along the bank with their branches still leafless, which places this early in the season.

There are no people, no animals and no buildings anywhere, which makes it one of the calmer sheets in the collection and a good one for an adult who wants something undemanding to work on in the evening.

The boulders take shading beautifully. Light along the top edge, dark where they meet the ground, and the bank immediately reads as three dimensional.

Those bare branches are accurate rather than an oversight. Most riverside willows and alders flower before they leaf, so the earliest spring color along a stream is usually on the ground, not overhead.
