A pale path runs up the middle of this meadow and narrows as it climbs toward a pair of low hills, giving the page a clear sense of distance that most flower sheets skip. Everything close to you is large. Simple five petal blooms crowd the left bank at almost half the width of a hand, while the right side grows taller, with slim buds, seed heads and long blades leaning across each other.
Two butterflies work the near flowers, one with patterned wings held open above the left bank and one hovering at the right. A bumblebee flies just below the second butterfly, its body banded and its wings drawn as plain ovals.
The sky carries a low sun tucked behind flat bottomed clouds, and the hills meet in a soft V where the path disappears.
The scale split is what makes this useful. A younger child can take the big foreground petals and the open sky, and someone with more patience can work into the grasses, where the lines cross often and the gaps get narrow.
