A bird stands on the rim of its nest, side on, beak slightly open. Its body is one clean teardrop with a row of small dashes marking the breast and a few long strokes along the folded wing. The eye is a single filled dot, which is all the face this drawing needs.
The nest below it is the showpiece. Dozens of separate twigs weave over and under each other around the bowl, every strand drawn as its own closed shape, and three eggs sit in the hollow at the middle.
Blossoms take everything else. Branches spread from the trunk at the bottom and carry five petal flowers, tight buds and pointed leaves all the way to the edges of the sheet.
Color the nest with two or three browns rather than one. Alternating the strands is what makes the weave read as woven instead of as a bowl.
Then leave the eggs pale. A soft blue or a plain cream against the dark twigs gives the page its focal point, and it costs nothing.
The blossoms can take a single pink throughout, or a different shade on each branch if you want the tree to look like it is opening over several days.
