A tall maypole stands dead center, topped with a pointed finial above a stepped cap and a short fluted collar. Two ribbons wind down the shaft in opposite directions and cross each other again and again all the way to the grass. From the cap, two much wider streamers sweep out to the left and right edges, each one scalloped along its lower side and dotted with small teardrops.
A dancer stands on either side of the pole, both reaching up to take hold of it. The one on the left wears a soft bonnet tied with a bow, and her skirt is patterned with triangles and rows of small circles. The one on the right has her hair swept back and a bow at the waist, with rings scattered across her skirt. Both wear low heeled shoes and both skirts flare wide as they turn.
The meadow behind them is packed with open blossoms, curling stems and tufted grass, and the sky above carries loose spirals, tiny flowers and two butterflies. There is real density here, so it rewards a colorist who likes to work through a page in sections rather than finish it in one sitting.
