A girl runs to the right across a flat stretch of grass, ponytail flying, one arm lifted toward the sky. Two diamond kites ride the wind well above her, each trailing a long tail with bows tied along its length. Three small clouds drift nearby. Short blades of grass mark the ground line and nothing else occupies the paper.
This is the simplest sheet in the spring set. The lines are thin, the shapes are big and open, and a great deal of white space survives. That empty sky is not a flaw. Children add their own birds, a sun, extra kites or a friend running alongside, and plenty of them do.
Ages three to seven suit it best. Each kite breaks into four clean triangles, which turns the page into a tidy little lesson in symmetry. Ask a child to make matching triangles opposite each other and watch how carefully they slow down.
Crayons work well because the areas are large. Paint holds up too, since the open background leaves nothing fiddly to work around. Print it before a windy afternoon outdoors.
