Leaves radiate out from a plain circle at the center of this mandala in two complete rings. The inner ring holds eight broad maple leaves pointing outward. The outer ring holds sixteen narrower pointed leaves that fill the gaps between them. Every leaf carries a central vein and three side veins, and the whole design is symmetrical all the way round. Mandalas work differently from scene pages. The symmetry means a choice made on one side has an obvious partner on the other, and most people start matching colors across the design without being told to. That is where the calm comes from. Work outward from the circle in the middle and the pattern reveals itself as you go. Try two alternating colors around the inner ring and a single tone across the outer one. Or color opposite pairs to match and let the design read as a wheel turning. The plain center circle is deliberately empty. Leave it white for contrast against the busy rings, or fill it with one strong color as a focal point.
