A single broad tree fills the top two thirds of this sheet, its canopy drawn as one great round mass packed with separate leaves and with acorns tucked between them. A squirrel sits at the foot of the trunk holding an acorn up in both paws. Four pumpkins rest in the grass around the base, and behind all of it the land rolls away in low striped fields with small hedges along the ridges. A few loose leaves drift through the sky. There is fine work in the canopy and a lot of open space below it, so two people of different ages can share the page.
The canopy is the real decision. Coloring every leaf its own shade takes an hour and looks wonderful. Picking three shades and scattering them takes ten minutes and looks very nearly as good. Both are a fair way to spend this page. Keep the acorns a solid brown so they stay findable among all that green.
Squirrels bury far more acorns than they ever dig back up, and the forgotten ones grow. A single gray squirrel can plant several thousand nuts in one autumn, which makes the animal at the bottom of this picture partly responsible for the one above it.
