A stag stands among slender trees with mist lying in bands between the trunks, softening everything behind him. The artist has drawn the deer sharply, with layered fur along the flanks and antlers branching cleanly, and deliberately left the further trees fainter and less complete so the fog reads without any gray being needed. Fallen leaves cover the ground. This is a detailed sheet for adults and older teenagers.
The mist tells you how to color the page. Work at full strength on the stag and the nearest trunks, then use much lighter pressure on everything further back, and let the palest trees stay barely touched. Do not outline the fog or fill it in. Empty paper is doing that job already, and adding gray will kill it. Short strokes following the direction of the coat will keep the fur convincing.
Autumn is the season the antlers are for. Stags grow a fresh set each year and carry them through the rut, using them to spar with rivals, then shed them entirely in winter and start over.
