Two children are captured in mid-air above a big heap of leaves, arms thrown out, with more leaves flying up around them. A rake leans against a tree at the side, which tells you exactly how the pile got there. The figures are drawn with bold simple outlines and the leaves are large and well separated, making this one of the easiest sheets in the autumn set. Children from about four upward can manage it on their own.
Because the leaf pile is made of dozens of separate shapes, it is a great page for letting a child use every warm color in the box without any of it looking wrong. Red, orange, yellow, gold and brown can all go in, in any order. Steer the strongest colors toward the middle of the pile where the children are landing, and the eye will go straight there. Chunky crayons are perfectly suited to this one.
Leaves fall on purpose, which children often find surprising. The tree grows a special layer of cells across the base of each leaf stalk in autumn that cuts it loose deliberately, so the leaf is released rather than simply dying and dropping off.
