A baby and a teddy bear lie cheek to cheek in the middle of this page, both fast asleep. The baby is on the left with eyes closed under long drawn lashes, a soft curl of hair on the crown and one bare foot tucked up at the bottom with toes marked on the sole. The bear leans in from the right, its eyes shut in two curved lines, a broad muzzle below and both front paws folded across the baby.

What makes this one unusual is that almost every surface is patterned. The baby's romper, the bear's body, ears and arms are all filled with fine flowing swirls, feathered strokes and small rosettes, so the two figures read as a single decorated mass rather than two plain shapes. Only the baby's face and the bear's muzzle are left smooth and open.

Behind them the background is a field of loose curling tendrils. Large open flowers with dense centers sit in all four corners and along both sides, with leaves and smaller blossoms filling the gaps. A long curved bolster runs beneath the pair. This is fine, patient work, and the two bare faces are the only places the eye gets to rest.
